Welcome to TeX. You should look up the titlesec package, which makes it easy to customise the formatting of section-unit titles. Possible duplicates: Change size of section, subsection, subsubsection, paragraph and subparagraph title ; Can I make all section headings bigger?
Werner I think that no duplicates here. None of these say what to do, if you want exact "N pt" size, while writing some papers sometimes have such editorial requirements. The duplicates cover a general case, where you can use standard font switches.

Howell Jun 2 '15 at The titlesec solution seems to work for sections and subsections, but not for parts and chapters in the book class. And my editor wants 13pt for the part title. Is there a solution for this with titlesec?

Feedback on Q2 Community Roadmap. Linked Page styles in Latex terms refers not to page dimensions, but to the running headers and footers of a document. The possibilities of changing the headers in plain Latex are actually quite limited. The possible styles are:. The following commands placed at the beginning of an article document will set the header of all pages one-sided to contain "John Smith" top left, "On page styles" centered and the page number top right:.
If you want them to print the actual name of the chapter without converting it to uppercase use the following command:. Watch out: if you provide long text in two different "parts" only in the footer or only in the header, you might see overlapping text. Moreover, with the following commands you can define the thickness of the decorative lines on both the header and the footer:. The first line for the header, the second for the footer.
Setting it to zero means that there will be no line. Two solutions:. The tricky problem when customizing headers and footers is to get things like running section and chapter names in there. Standard LaTeX accomplishes this with a two-stage approach. The values of these two commands are overwritten whenever a chapter or section command is processed.
To get better control over the headers, one can use the package fancyhdr written by Piet van Oostrum. It provides several commands that allow you to customize the header and footer lines of your document. For a more complete guide, the author of the package produced this documentation. Both the header and footer comprise three elements each according to its horizontal position left, centre or right.
The styles supported by fancyhdr :. The styles can be customized with fancyhdr specific commands. To set header and footer style, fancyhdr provides three interfaces. They all provide the same features, you just use them differently. Choose the one you like most.
Hopefully, the behaviour of the above commands is fairly intuitive: if it has head in it, it affects the head etc, and obviously, lc and r means l eft, c entre and r ight respectively. These commands will only work for fancy and fancyplain. See below for examples. For a clean customization, we recommend you start from scratch.Latex Tutorial 2 of 11: Sections, Margins, Page Numbers
To do so you should erase the current pagestyle. Providing empty values will make the field blank. First you can use the fancyplain style. For instance:. It has the same behavior of the previous code, but you will get empty header and footer in the title and at the beginning of chapters. Alternatively you could redefine the plain style, for example to have a really plain page when you want. An example is the following:. In that case you can use any style but fancyplain because it would override your redefinition.
For two-sided, it's common to mirror the style of opposite pages, you tend to think in terms of inner and outer. So, the same example as above for two-sided is:.Using a different font size on a global level will affect all normal-sized text as well as the size of headings, footnotes, etc. By changing the font size locally, however, a single word, a few lines of text, a large table or a heading throughout the document may be modified.
The standard classes, article, report and book support 3 different font sizes, 10pt, 11pt, 12pt by default 10pt. The font size is set through the optional argument, e. Should you require a different font size for your document, use the extsizes package. It allows for the following font sizes: 8pt, 9pt, 10pt, 11pt, 12pt, 14pt, 17pt, 20pt. The KOMA-script and memoir classes are more flexible when it comes to font sizes.
Please see the documentation for more details. A table of the exact font sizes in points can be found on wikibooks. When using another font type, such as the Adobe Times Roman equivalent available in the PSNFSS package see example belowhowever, you can benefit from that font size.
Note: The figure is scaled and therefore does not show the actual font size. It illustrates the difference between the font sizes. Here is alternative, more flexible approach. The baseline-skip should be set to roughly 1. Again, this only works with a non-standard font type.

For some reason the font size doesn't work and the header information that I was hoping for doesn't appear in my testing. Anyone know why this is happening?
This is what I used to control font size and color in an R-markdown file. It basically overrides the CSS style sheets without having to create a new file. The example changes the sizes of the headers and titles, as well as the inline text and the R-code text, and sets some colors as well. In my case I needed to pack more information into a document that had a specified number of pages so I made everything smaller.
Added more more styles, comments, and a bit of color to make this answer more useful. And a screen shot:. Learn more. Rmarkdown font size and header Ask Question. Asked 4 years, 10 months ago. Active 2 years, 7 months ago. Viewed 50k times. The default file looks like this: Untitled.

Works pretty good, except for the first modification. Because changing the size without further options, it changes to a different font. The standard classes don't use a sans-serif font by default, so your last requirement makes me wonder if you are using some non-standard document class. Suggestions are duly appreciated. It worked for me. It may be worth noting that the headers and footers only appear from page 2 onwards. As a side note, I did not understand the reason for 5mm vertical space you left in the header. I think you tried to correct the spacing. If so, better way is to use geometry and adjust head height. Without this 5mm the head height of 65pt is sufficient. The gap between the header and the main body is decided by the length headsep. Sign up to join this community.
